Mrs. Arbogast is in her second year of teaching fifth grade here at C.C.C.S. She has been working with school-age children for over 20 years. Mrs. Arbogast attended Diablo Valley College, Sacramento State, St. Mary’s College, and Cal State East Bay. Her daughter currently attends C.C.C.S. and her son will begin kindergarten here next year. In her spare time, Mrs. Arbogast enjoys reading, sewing, baking, traveling and camping with her family.

Language Arts
Reading
TEXT: McGraw Hill 5th grade Reader, Student selected books for reports.
Emphasis: Gain awareness of Christian values through reading, enjoyment, to be culturally literate, develop comprehension skills.
Vocabulary
TEXT: McGraw Hill Language series
Emphasis: Context clues, homonyms, antonyms, synonyms, connotation, denotation.
Spelling
TEXT: CSI Spelling Spectrum
Emphasis: Word origins
Grammar
TEXT: McGraw Hill English
Content: Subjects & predicates, nouns, verbs, pronouns, adjectives, adverbs, prepositions, conjunctions, interjections, etymology.
Writing
TEXT: McGraw-Hill
Content: Transcription, point of view, reports, fantasy, book writing & making (Typical Day at Age 30). Writing across the curriculum, use of imagery, editing skills.
Emphasis: Creating “own voice” in writing

Mathematics
Text: Sadlier-Oxford Progress in Mathematics
Perspective:
Mathematics deals with the spatial and numerical aspects of God’s creation. Mathematics is man’s attempt to describe the order of creation in terms of number and shape. Since creation is an integral whole, the relationship of math to other disciplines is emphasized. The math program provides a balanced diet of investigation, precision & application.
Content: Find decimal and percent equivalents for fractions, perform calculations with negative numbers, prime factors, develop proficiency division and multiplication, multiplication and division of fractions, use simple algebraic expressions, solve problems involving linear functions with integer values, compute volumes and areas of simple objects, identify and measure plane and solid geometric shapes using compass, ruler & protractor, display, analyze & interpret different data sets.
Emphasis: Problem solving, critical thinking, precision of skills, appreciation for math, express solutions clearly and logically using appropriate mathematical notation.

Science
Text: Silver-Burdett
Perspective: Science is investigating the physical nature of God’s creation. God’s laws control the universe. Science attempts to gain knowledge of the laws and describe them in theories which may be modified in time due to further research. The aim of science is to enable students to become better stewards of God’s creation through investigating, organizing, and explaining natural phenomenon.

Social Studies
Text: Houghton Mifflin
Perspective:
Students explore God’s world through Geography as well as an exploration of our country’s early history, government, and economics.
Content: U.S. History from before the Europeans to the Civil War is studied. Students research a state and produce a state report. A project related to explorers is produced. Students develop an appreciation for this country and an understanding of the principles on which it was founded; in additions, they also complete an Immigration report. Students gain insight into the specific problems and conditions that confront Americans as well as analyze the issues from a Biblical perspective. The following skills are covered: Interpreting maps and globes, analyzing graphics (charts, diagrams, tables, graphs), and research methods. Field trips and films supplement course work.
