Mrs. Heinz loves teaching fourth grade at CCCS. and has been teaching here for six years. Some of her favorite things about fourth grade are camping in Coloma: 49er Fun, reading Island of Blue Dolphins, and doing Science experiments. Kate graduated from Dordt College with a double major in Elementary Education and Environmental Studies. Recently, she received her masters from Chapman University in Organizational Leadership. In her free time, she enjoys hiking and reading.

Language Arts
Reading
Text: Macmillan McGraw-Hill
Book It! participation.

Emphasis: Word families, homophones, synonyms, antonyms, referents and context clues
English
Text: Macmillan McGraw-Hill English
Content: Composition of personal narratives, writing & revising drafts, editing skills, writing tall tales, letter writing, descriptive writing, book reports, story writing (plot characters), making books, research reports. Grammar focuses on sentence structure (subjects, predicates), nouns (plural, proper, common, possessive, compound), verbs (action, linking, tenses), pronouns, adjectives, (comparative forms, articles), and adverbs (suffixes).

Mathematics
Mathematics deals with the spatial and numerical aspects of God’s creation. Mathematics is man’s attempt to describe the order of creation in terms of number and shape. Our well-rounded curriculum consists of Investigations, (explorations with manipulatives), Precision (drill & practice, rote memorization), and Application.
Course Content: estimation, rounding, mental math calculations, understand and use algorithms for addition and subtraction with regrouping, multi-digit multiplication and division, factoring, prime numbers, negative numbers, fractions, decimals, mixed numbers, algebraic functions (use letters & symbols in equations, understand expressions that use parentheses, measure area of various shapes, perimeter, learn geometric formulas, understand and solve problems with plane and solid shapes, statistics, data analysis and probability
Text: Sadlier-Oxford; Dale Seymour Math Investigations
Emphasis: Problem solving, critical thinking, precision of skills, appreciation for math, express solutions clearly and logically with appropriate mathematical notation.

Science
Science is investigating the physical nature of God’s creation. God’s laws control the universe. Science attempts to gain knowledge of the laws and describe them in theories which may be modified in time due to further research. The aim of science is to enable students to become better stewards of God’s creation through hands-on activities that challenge students to investigate, organize and explain natural phenomenon.

Emphasis:
Plants, Animal Adaptations, Ecosystems, Human Body (Circulatory, Respiratory and Digestive Systems), Properties of Matter, Earth, and Sun, Rocks and Minerals. Art projects are integrated into the study of Earth & Science to help demonstrate the concepts.

Social Studies
Text: Houghton Mifflin
Perspective: Social Studies examines the cultural development of mankind from a Biblical perspective. History records from varying perspectives the extent to which people have fulfilled God’s calling.
Content: There is extensive study of California history. Through the study students interpret maps, time lines, charts, & graphs. Field trips provide students with an opportunity to learn how historians work with primary and secondary sources.
Field trips: Mission San Jose, Sacramento (Railroad Museum, Capital Building), Coloma (49er fun campout including Gold Bug Park and Sutter’s Mill). Projects include: posters, writing and presenting essay papers and research papers.
