Mrs. Santoro graduated from U.C. Davis. She taught for five years in four different grades. She then home schooled her four children for twelve years. Mrs. Santoro taught Kindergarten for six years at CCCS and loved teaching children to read. Mrs. Santoro is excited about her move to third grade because the children can raise their hands, wait quietly, and line up without talking! The age group is a lot of fun too! In her free time, Mrs. Santoro loves to read for relaxation and hike with her family.

Mrs. Bellusa has a bachelors of Science from Saint Mary's College and a Masters in Education. This is her third year teaching third grade and her first year teaching here at Contra Costa Christian. Mrs. Bellusa enjoys conducting Science experiments with her students and teaching new math concepts. In her free time, Mrs. Bellusa enjoys traveling, cooking, and spending time with her family.

Course of Study
Language Arts
Perspective: Language Arts focuses on equipping students to be God’s healing agents in a broken world by learning to communicate meaningfully, lovingly, truthfully, and effectively.
Text: Macmillan McGraw-Hill
Content: The following skills are taught, practiced and then applied in meaningful situations. 1) Composition: writing first drafts, editing, final copying; paragraph writing; personal story, how to paragraph, book reports; letter writing; research reports; story writing. 2) Grammar: types of sentences; nouns, verbs, pronouns, adjectives, and adverbs, dictionary skills. 3) Reading: students read various stories from textbooks that improve their reading skills and vocabulary. They also read many fiction chapter books in small groups. 4) Spelling: learn some common spelling generalizations, word origins. 5) Handwriting; students refine their cursive and write assignments in cursive the last half of the year. 6) Vocabulary development; new words are introduced in each subject. Study skills, grammar, mechanics, and spelling are taught at the point of use and integrated into the writing process.

Mathematics
Perspective: Mathematics is man’s attempt to describe the world in terms of numbers and shapes. A balanced diet of math in the third grade consists of
Exploration (investigation & discovery, with an emphasis on the use of manipulatives). Precision (drill & practice of basic facts), and Application (using math in real life situations).
Text: Sadlier-Oxford
Content: place value to hundred thousands and expanded notation, memorize basic multiplication and division facts, solve multi-digit multiplication problems, division of multi-digit numbers by single digit divisors, using addition and subtraction to solve problems with decimals, addition and subtraction of fractions and mixed numbers, four-digit addition and subtraction with regrouping, statistics and probability (experiments, data collection, graphing), geometry (circles, lines, angles, triangles, congruency, polygons).

Science
Perspective: Science is the study of God’s creation. God’s creation is diverse, beautiful, and orderly. When we study creation we begin to learn about how the world was made and how it works. The aim of science is to enable students to become better stewards of God’s creation through investigating, organizing, and explaining natural phenomenon.

Social Studies
Text: Houghton Mifflin
Perspective: The Social Studies curriculum focuses on the study of the world and people that God created in the past. Countries, cultures, and historical events are studied to learn principles for the present and the future.
Content:
· Geography - Continents, characteristics of oceans, rivers, deserts, mountains, forests, and prairies. Land forms, 7 natural world wonders.
· Native Americans - Study of the culture of
different tribes (plains, NW coast, SW U.S.)
· American History - Pilgrims at Plymouth, settlers moving away from the coast , Westward movment, Wilderness Road and Oregon Trail
· The U.S.A. Today - Farming, steel, railroads, government.
